What is Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis within therapy for the treatment and relief of a variety of medical and psychological symptoms. Hypnosis, in a clinical setting, is a very pleasant experience of feeling relaxed and yet your mind being very focused. In this state you can move around and talk if you wish to. You will also hear and remember everything that is said, if it is important for you to remember. Whilst you are in this altered state we work together to help remove unwanted behaviours, thoughts and feelings. I act only as a guide, helping you to gently ease into the hypnotic state. You will actually be hypnotising yourself – therefore you are always in control. And this power of being able to use self-hypnosis can be a wonderful tool long after we have finished working together. Whilst in this altered state of consciousness we work together using metaphors, images, suggestions and positive visualisations of the future to change your mind. Science shows that by about 35 years of age so much of what we do, think and feel is an automatic unconscious response that our lives are often dictated by hard-wired habits, traumatic events of the past and our fears of the future. Why

Because you want to make positive changes to your life. It may be that you are fed up feeling anxious or stressed, a fear or a phobia is stopping you living your life or unwanted past events are having a detrimental effect on your life. If the source of the issue is contained in your mind, even if it manifests in your body as tension or pain, then you can regain control through hypnotherapy, self-hypnosis and other techniques based on the mind/body connection.

Who

As long as you are willing to be hypnotised then most people can enter the trance state. ‘The ease at which you enter the trance depends on you feeling safe and comfortable in therapy. I offer a free 20-minute phone consultation so that I can answer any questions you may have about hypnotherapy and you can see if you would feel relaxed in my company. If you think you can relax in my company then this will help you to drift into a hypnotic state more easily.

I am a practicing certified clinical hypnotherapist with over 15 years’ experience and I subscribe to a client-driven, solution based approach. I studied hypnotherapy with the London College of Clinical Hypnosis and I’m also trained in Neuro-Linguistic Programming and the Emotional Freedom Technique.

I am registered with the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (www.cnhc.org.uk) who were set up by the government to protect the public. As a CNHC registrant I have agreed to be bound by the highest standards of conduct and have registered voluntarily. It also only allows registrants that have been professionally trained and fully insured to practise.

I am a full member of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis and adhere to their Code of Conduct (www.bsch.org.uk)

My studies and experience have taught me to keep an open mind.  The more I learn the more I am aware that there’s still so much more to learn. This approach has given me the freedom to absorb many different approaches, from eastern philosophy, meditation and energy healing to quantum psychology, neuroscience and psychoneuroimmunology; while continuously evolving, updating and improving my model of the world.

This defines not only my approach to therapy but to a mindset that I seek to impart to my clients which I hope will serve them as well as it serves me.

Services

Our session usually begins with a conversation. We discuss your goal or situation, the hypnosis process, and any questions you might have. When we use hypnosis I help you let go of physical tension and get your mind into a state similar to pre- and post-sleep, daydreaming, or meditation. Hypnosis is most often a state of intensified physical relaxation and mental focus. You remain conscious throughout the session, interacting with me during hypnosis by signaling or speaking. Hypnosis is not sleep, and you do not lose control or go into a frozen, cataleptic state. Many people experience some dissociation (i.e. “blanking out”) during hypnosis, but this does not hinder the process. In fact, it can enhance the effectiveness of hypnotic suggestions. When hypnosis is concluded, it is normal to feel so relaxed that you don’t want to move. You can emerge from hypnosis slowly and gently, and you will be able to go about your day normally.

Whether you need to speak in public, take an exam or a driving test it is advantageous to feel a sense of confidence and control. When you are feeling confident you are more in control of your mind and body. Your breathing is natural, free and easy; your thoughts are exclusively on what you are doing, your mind can recall information and your goals are clear and defined.
Though three one-hour sessions of therapy we will focus on your goal, your preparation, clearing any unwanted thoughts and unconscious negative patterns and building up resources.

Phobias differ to anxiety – they do not involve just intense fear, they are an irrational and an extreme fear of one object or situation. Once you’ve decided you want to quit and become a healthy non-smoker please call me to arrange an appointment. The session lasts about an hour and a half as we discuss every aspect of your habit and the positives of leaving the cigarettes (or anything else you might be smoking) in the past. Before you arrive for the session you need to throw away everything in your life concerned with smoking – ashtrays, leftover cigarettes, tobacco etc. I also ask that you wash or dry clean any clothes that you regularly wear whilst smoking. After hypnotherapy you will leave with a clear mind and return to a non-smokers life.
